Platforms, Cages and Clipless, Oh My!

January 7th, 2010 | Comments (1) | post by Erin

There are three main types of pedals when it comes to biking; whether you're road biking, trail riding or hitting some serious mountains. Ask any experienced cyclist and they are likely to have an opinion on what you should use. Or if you feel like being overwhelmed with info, just do a Google search!

As a beginner, I started on metal platform pedals (smooth plastic version shown above) ...

New Year, New Resolutions

January 6th, 2010 | Comments (0) | post by Erin

Apologies to anyone who might have been let down by our lack of posts recently. Mike and I certainly fell off the blogging wagon with the holidays! And with the frigid temps outside lately, we haven't been thinking about biking. But just a few updates now and then we'll get back on a semi-normal schedule!

We went to Texas for Christmas and even though we were only there for 5 days, it seemed ...

Review: Clif Bar Shot Bloks

December 17th, 2009 | Comments (0) | post by Erin

After I experienced my first bonk (aka hitting a wall while riding and feeling like you can't go a step further), I did a little research into the best electrolyte supplement for on the bike. Quite a few people are fans of the liquid gels but I really, REALLY dislike the texture of those; plus, they're messy. Others like the new jelly bean style supplements (I find them too sweet), but my ...

Diary of a Bike Novice: My First Group Ride

December 16th, 2009 | Comments (0) | post by Erin

So if you read my last post, you know that I started a biking meetup group while I was still terrified to actually ride a bike. Granted, I had backup in the form of Mike, my very own bike addict. But I still had to actually GO on the ride...something I didn't really factor in. Well, I mean I did...sort of. We've all done it. Signed up for something in the distant future, fully planning on ...

Diary of a Bike Novice: The Head Nod

December 14th, 2009 | Comments (1) | post by Erin

I'm going to be honest here, my foray into the world of biking was 100% prompted by trying to be a good girlfriend. And believe me, I know I'm not the only one out there! But most of my fellow bike beginners probably rode bikes as kids. Me? As I said in an earlier post, I grew up riding horses, not bikes. So when I say I was a total novice, I'm not kidding. And I felt real fear every time I ...

The Winter Cyclist

December 13th, 2009 | Comments (0) | post by Erin

While you might be able to stumble on a few romantic images of a cool cyclist pedaling serenely on an empty country road, surrounded by snowy fields...the reality is far more like the above image. Grungy, wet and occasionally dangerous, winter cycling is not for the faint of heart. As the organizer of a community bike group, I'm struggling to come up with fun winter events that involve the ...

The Great Frame Debate

December 10th, 2009 | Comments (3) | post by Erin

I'll start this by saying, as a bike novice, I'm definitely not the end all expert on frame materials (and I'm only speaking for road bikes...I'll leave you MTB people to Mike). So moving on, I'm no expert but I have listened to Mike debate (at length) the pro/cons of each material on his search for the "perfect" bike. He has now settled on steel as his favorite, but I personally far prefer ...

Review: CamelBak Women’s Magic 2.1

November 24th, 2009 | Comments (0) | post by Erin

Camelbak is a well known brand name out on the trail or road. They make a huge variety of hydration packs for outdoor enthusiasts, whether you're a hiker, trail runner, mountain biker, speed racer, Camelbak should have a pack that you'll like. I struggled when choosing mine as I hadn't biked more than 5 miles at that point so I wasn't sure what I'd need/want. I did know that I'm able to go ...

Diary of a Bike Novice: Diaper pants

November 23rd, 2009 | Comments (2) | post by Erin

Long before I actually found myself on a bike, wobbling down a crowded street, I was accompanying Mike to his favorite destinations. Bike stores. At that time, bikes all pretty much looked the same to me...and the bike clothes were all pretty much black and made for men. In fact, the bike stores we frequented were filled with guys, both store employees and customers. (To you single girls, ...

The Quick ‘n Dirty on Fixing a Flat

November 17th, 2009 | Comments (0) | post by Erin

How To Fix a Flat from Biking Society on Vimeo.

Fixing a flat is one of those essential life lessons if you're a cyclist (or driver) that you really should learn but that many of us put off. I generally have Mike with me on rides so I always thought, where's the need? Well, on our last big group ride, we broke up into two groups and of course, I got a flat. Out of the group of four that I ...
